The Grand Marais Playhouse is proud to present “The Tempest” by William Shakespeare, Abridged by Cass Foster on May 7, 8 and 9th. Friday, May 7 at 7 PM, Saturday and Sunday May 8 &9 at 2 PM.
The Tempest will be live-streamed in front of a limited audience. All tickets are ONLY available at www.grandmaraisplayhouse.com. In person tickets are limited and all audience members must be masked the entire time and be physically distanced from other households and individuals. No Walk-up sales permitted.
Virtual tickets are for the live stream and access to video for 48 hours.
In Person tickets are $25 for singles and $50 for households up to 4 people.
Virtual tickets are $7 individual and $15 for households. Show supporters may also purchase a $25 ticket.
The Tempest is believed to be Shakespeare’s final work. Written in 1611, it is a tale of loss and restoration that still resonates with us today. The play begins with the storm and we learn stories of loss and of violent betrayal. Through magic all parties are brought to the island that Prospera and her daughter Miranda were marooned upon twelve years ago. We come to know more about the characters as they circle the island and Prospera brings them to her for a confrontation. Some seek violence. Others seek freedom. Some find love, others find forgiveness.
The Tempest contains the famous quote:
“Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.
This is the community youth play for high school students and we celebrate our highs school seniors that have contributed to the theater throughout their school years.
On Sunday following the performance, The Grand Marais Playhouse will be awarding four seniors with the Excellence in Theater Arts award and $250 to Sylvia Berka, Saira Smith, Izy Sparks, and Abbey Stoddard.
Following the performance on Friday, the high school One Act cast will receive their trophy and medals for achieving second place at the regional competition in January. The awards were delivered late.
